  1. Group Prot-7 h (n = 10) was ventilated with a VT of 6 mL x kg− 1 throughout the experimentand a PEEP of 5 cmH20 during the preparatory phase but had the PEEP increased to 10 cmH20 after baseline. Group Prot-5 h was ventilated with a VT of 10 mL x kg− 1 and a PEEP of 5 cmH20 during the preparatory phase and, after baseline, with a VT of 6 mL x kg− 1 and a PEEP of 10 cmH20. Values are given as mean ± SD. The p-values are results of one-way ANOVAs
