Septic shock was defined as the presence of severe sepsis and one of the following conditions: a) systemic mean blood pressure of <60 mmHg (<80 mmHg if previous hypertension) after 20 to 30 mL/kg starch or 40 to 60 mL/kg serum saline solution; b) pulmonary capillary wedge pressure between 12 and 20 mmHg and need for dopamine of >5 mcg/kg/min; c) norepinephrine or epinephrine to maintain mean blood pressure at >60 mmHg (80 mmHg if previous hypertension).
