A proposed algorithm for the evaluation of the combination of serology and spirometry for assessing the possibility of P. aeruginosa infection. Results of serology and spirometry should always be interpreted together with the results of culture-based detection of P. aeruginosa in respiratory samples. The decision on starting antibiotic therapy should be based on the results of a positive culture and positive indirect methods should encourage the clinician to continue/repeat microbiological investigations.
